‘Friends of Syria’ to Recognize Syrian Opposition

Nations calling for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down are set to recognize a newly formed Syrian opposition coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

The statement is in a draft declaration expected to be endorsed Wednesday at the so-called Friends of Syria conference in Morocco.

More than 100 delegations are attending the meeting aimed at agreeing on a strategy for a political transition if President Assad’s government falls.  They are also expected to discuss how the conflict is effecting regional security, as well efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees.
