Libyan fighters move on to Syria

On March 19, the Turkish daily newspaper Hurriyet published an advertisement from the Libyan embassy in Turkey seeking hotels in Ankara, Izmir, Istanbul and Kayseri to accommodate veterans of last year’s civil war in Libya. Several hundred fighters are currently receiving treatment in Turkish hospitals. Once they are back on their feet some of them could swell the ranks of the Syrian rebellion. The same goes for Jordan, where numerous Libyan fighters are treated in local hospitals and are staying in the country along with their families. Qatar is picking up the tab.

At the end of last year Qatar began encouraging the former katiba fighters who were financed and armed by Doha to travel to the Syrian Free Army’s camps in Turkey or even to go directly to Syria to fight alongside the opposition (IOL 654).
