Yemen/Crisis: European ships face threats from AQAP attacks

The Yemeni Albayan Emirates daily warned on Wednesday against the possible take over of Yemeni ports by the tribal fighters. The newspaper asserted that the ongoing instability in the country could trigger a civil war or create an opportunity for Al-Qaeda in the Arabic Peninsula (AQAP) terrorists to take control over Yemeni cities, which was the case in Zinjibar, capital of the southern Abyan governorate. Therefore, American, French, Israeli and British ships were deployed off the Yemeni coasts in order to protect European oil tankers and to protect Yemeni ports from this impending violence.

The newspaper further added that British warships which were involved in the NATO operation against forces loyal to the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi are now heading towards the Red Sea to take part in the operations.

It should be mentioned that oil facilities have been already targeted in the past. As the situation escalates further in Yemen, it can be expected that the European oil tankers will become the next targets for violent terrorist attacks.
