Media reported that Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) opened a fire on Karamoja warriors fleeing from military custody in Moroto District and killing at least two on Sunday. Residents however put the death toll at eight, adding that the gun battle took place near the UPDF 5th Division Headquarters. According to them, some of the victims died later in the bushes.
Defence and Military Spokesman stated that the attackers were scheduled for trial by the court martial next week when they attempted to escape.
Reportedly, the assault comes in the wake of Uganda Human Rights Commission report released last month which accused the UPDF for killing unarmed Karimojong and looting their cattle in the ongoing disarmament exercise in the remote sub-region.
