Violence leaves 19 dead in Mogadishu

More than 19 people have been reportedly killed and over 55 wounded in violence in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Monday, rescue services and the police said.

According to officials, at least 13 people, mostly civilians were killed when insurgents fired mortars at the presidential palace and airport during a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the country’s national army. African Union (AU) peacekeepers based at the airport and nearby retaliated. The shelling also left 55 injured.

In a separate attack, two remotely controlled roadside bombs aimed at an AU convoy killed four civilians and two police officers in Mogadishu.
