Four elite Army Scout Rangers were injured on Tuesday during a gun fight with Al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyafterrorists in Sumisip, a town in the southern province of Basilan. Lieutenant General Ben Dolorfino, chief of theWestern Mindanao Command confirmed the incident, adding that the security forces were on patrol when they came across the terrorists.
Lt. Dolorfino furthermore said the terrorists had suffered a high toll of casualties as troop reinforcements targeted them with mortars and other heavy artillery. It has been reported that the injured soldiers were hit by a booby trap explosion, while an undisclosed military source said four terrorists were killed in the fighting.
Basilan has become a safe haven for Abu Sayyaf terrorists, who have been responsible for several deadly attacks and kidnappings on the archipelago. Earlier on April 13, 14 people, including three marines and one policeman, were killed in a series of terrorist attacks carried out by the group against several targets in the southern city of Isabela.
