New outbreaks of street violence during all-national strike in South Africa

Officials and media reported that several members of SA Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) and a police officer were injured when clash broke out between the two sides in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

According to security officials, tension erupted when one of the SAMWU members, who gathered at the meeting in Port Elizabeth,  threw a half brick to a police personnel deployed in the area. Afterwards police started firing rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Reportedly, protesters sustained minor injuries and have been admitted to hospital for treatment. However, the policeman was said to be in critical condition and was wounded on the head and on his left eye.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the area. Police also had water cannons on standby in case violence broke out again. The incident comes after SAMWU said on Friday that all picketing would be halted so workers could be briefed on a new offer by the employers.
