ETA suspect arrested in Lisbon

Spanish media reported that Portuguese police arrested a suspected member of theBasque separatist group ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna), in Lisbon as he tried to board a flight to Venezuela.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo said Andoni Zengotitabengoa, 30, was hoping to fly toCaracas, but was detained at Lisbon airport after he presented a forged Mexican passport. According to police sources, Zengotitabengoa has been on the run since a weapons cache – including several hundred kilogrammes of explosives –  belonging to the terrorist group was uncovered in the central Portuguese city of Obidos. One other ETA member was arrested in connection with this weapons cache, which was discovered early February.

The latest capture comes less than two weeks after Spanish High Court judge Eloy Velasco accused Venezuela’s left-wing government of providing support for ETA and the Colombian rebel group FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia). However, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has dismissed these allegations.
