Sources within the Defence Ministry declared that at least 12 leftist guerrillas belonging to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have been killed in an operation jointly conducted by the Colombian air force and national police near the southern town of Puerto Rico in the Caqueta province.
According to the Colombian defense minister Gabriel Silva, the operation targeted a camp of the mobile Teofilo Forero unit. Silva confirmed the death of the 12 FARC rebels, however he failed to disclose any information on the identities of the victims. The Teofilo Forero column consists of some 90 armed and well-trained members and is suspected of being the FARC group behind the abduction and killing of the Caqueta governor Luis Fransico Cuellar in December last year.
This is a new blow for the FARC, which has been increasingly targeted by the government in recent months.
