5 dead after FARC attempt to kidnap governor candidate

Five people have been killed and four others wounded whenRevolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas ambushed and tried to kidnap Jose Alberto Perez, a governor candidate forColombia‘s southern Guaviare department, on Sunday evening, officials said.

An unnamed military official said the convoy transporting Perez and his wife was ambushed by the FARC when travelling along a department highway. The driver and 4 security guards were killed during the assault and Perez was injured in the leg and taken to a hospital in the area.

On December 21 2009, Luis Francisco Cuellar, governor of the Caquetadepartment, was murdered by the FARC just hours after they had kidnapped him from his home.

The FARC have increased their pressure on local authorities ahead of several elections. Besides the special governorship elections on February 28 in the Guaviare department, after previous governor was forced to quit, there are also parliamentary elections in March and a presidential poll in May.
