UAE: Killers of Hamas leader ‘identified’ by Dubai police

Dubai, 30 Jan.(AKI) – Dubai police said they have identified the killers of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a senior Hamas commander assassinated in a hotel room in the United Arab Emirates earlier this month.

“We’ve identified them and are on their trail even if we think they’ve left the country,” according to a Dubai police statement read on al-Arabiya television. The presumed assailants were holding European passports, the statement said.

Dubai asked for assistance from Interpol in finding the alleged killers, according to police. Interpol is the international crime-fighting body that facilitates cross-border police co-operation.

Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades founder al-Mabhouh was killed on 20 January by an electric shock to his head, according to his brother Fayed al-Mabhouh.

Hamas claimed Israeli agents were responsible for al-Mabouh’s assassination.

“We in Hamas hold the Zionist enemy responsible for the criminal assassination of our brother, and we pledge to God and to the blood of the martyrs and to our people to continue his path of jihad and martyrdom,” the group said in a statement.

Hamas said Mahmoud al-Mabhouh had been responsible for the abduction in 1989 of two Israeli soldiers, who were both later killed. The group said it would “retaliate for this Zionist crime at the appropriate moment”.

A Israeli government has declined to comment.
