Government officials reported the deaths of three Yemeni soldiers, who were killed when unknown gunmen opened fire at their military checkpoint in the Shabwa province on Sunday. One other soldier was said to have suffered injuries as the attack was attributed to the southern separatists.
Reportedly, the attackers targeted the Yemeni soldiers while they were carrying out counter-terrorists operations against suspected Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (ASAP) fighters, early on Sunday. The attackers fled the scene of the attack after gunning down the soldiers.
A security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity stated on Monday that he believes Al-Qaeda is behind the attack.
In recent weeks Yemeni troops carried out several air strikes on the suspected terrorists hideouts and made claims on killing many of the terrorist belonging to Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. However, this claim was denied in a statement by the terrorist group.
