Reuters news agency reported today that at least eight people had been killed and more than a dozen other injured in clashes between Hizbul Islam and al Shabaab rebel groups and pro-governmental militia forces in the Central Somali town of Baladweyne, capital of Hiiran region.Reportedly Islamists took control over the town and started raiding the offices of humanitarian aid agencies present in the town, namely the World Food Programme (WFP) and Save the Children (UK). The same sources stated that computers and other goods were looted by Al Shabaab fighters. – an Al Qaeda linked terrorist group.

The collaboration between Al-Qaeda Al Shabaab group and Hizbul Islam is extremely worrying as the 2 groups were formerly fighting each other. A new alliance could therefore lead to increased attacks against the Somali government or in Kenya.
